Support Learning Camps in Bangladesh

How would you feel in an overcrowded classroom without proper learning materials and constantly worrying that you may be physically punished if you make a mistake?

Unfortunately this is the daily reality for many kids in Bangladesh. The Learning Camps Project provides a safe and encouraging learning environment for kids struggling in school.

  • There are not enough teachers or classrooms in Bangladesh for all children

  • A commonly held belief in Bangladesh is that children from poor families are not able to succeed at school

  • Teachers often don't allow students to work in groups or ask questions in class

  • Teachers are poorly paid and have huge class sizes
(57 is an average class size!)

Update 1: 14 April, 2008

Rubina's Story
Rubina's speaking disability made learning in the classroom difficult and she began to fall behind the other students. Her neighbours did not want to play with her so she spent most of her time at home alone.

In January 2007 Rubina's father went to the local primary school to enrol her into class 1. The school teachers advised him to send her to a special disability school. Rubina's father believed in her ability and convinced the school to accept her.

Rubina started well but did not receive the in-class attention she really needed. Without improvements in her study she lost interest in schooling. Rubina's parents decided to take her to a Learning Camp within the same school. Her Learning Camp Tutor treated her with extra care and helped Rubina find some friends.

Rubina is now happy and has made big improvements in her joyful learning environment. The Learning Camp Tutor provided extra support to her to help her catch up in class, giving her encouragement to read and write, recite rhymes and songs. Practicing and preparing for lessons every day, Rubina now speaks much more clearly and everyone can understand her.
